Medicinska fakulteten, Institutionen för Medicinsk och translationell biologi

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Post doctor (2 years) within Behavioral Pharmacology

The Department of  Medical and translational biology is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within Behavioral Pharmacology The scholarship is full-time for two years with access 01-02-2025 (date month, year) or by agreement.

Project description

A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Sahlholm Laboratory. Our work focuses on the pharmacology and function of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the actions of psychiatric and neurological therapeutics, such as antipsychotics and antiparkinsonian drugs. We are looking for a new fellow who will be using in vivo behavioral assays, such as open field locomotion and prepulse inhibition, to study the role of specific signaling pathways downstream of the dopamine D3 receptor in baseline behavior and in animal models of psychosis, Parkinson’s disease, and substance abuse.

While the applicant will be expected to contribute to ongoing projects in the Sahlholm lab, s/he will also be encouraged to develop their own ideas related to the GPCR field.

Qualifications

The post-doctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient.

Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree before that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Additional useful qualifications

We are looking for someone who shares our enthusiasm for GPCR research: thus, a keen interest in neuropharmacology is of key importance. Prior experience with behavioral assays and pharmacology research will be positively evaluated. Experience with in vitro pharmacology and cell culture is also meriting.

Application
The application should be written in English or Swedish, and attached documents should be in Word or PDF format. The application should be registered via Umeå University’s e-recruitment system Varbi and submitted by the deadline 12-17-2024.

The application must include:

  • A brief description of your research interests and a statement describing why you are interested in the stipend.
